The Tide of Opinions
I care about this place I call home, my country, the United States. I’m only one of many and we can each a have different point of view but there are also several things that I believe we can easily agree on. These are the things for our common good, stability and what enriches our lives.
We have declared ourselves citizens of this place, either born here or by adopting this place as our own. We have a government set in motion by wise people after they passionately discussed and then chose to compromise, each moving beyond their own different point of view for what has now been working for us, the people of this place. We elect representatives to guide us into the future, one that benefits us all. Ours is not a despotic regime which would care only for the leaders to prosper, certainly at the cost of the citizens.
Why do we need any government at all? Isn’t it for our well being and security? When government acts it is supposed to be for the common goal of the well being of people, for without people there is no reason for a declared country.
We are the keepers of this place we call home and the structures that support our lives. Today everyone has so many ways to get information, almost to the point of drowning in it. This has led to our being attracted and distracted by the brightest, loudest, most disturbing, or fear raising “information”. Pandering to our emotions leads us into separate corners, holding sticks against the darkness we are told is “out there”.
We, the people, need public officials to look to for leadership and inspiration. Officials that speak to us with insults or for shock effects insult our values as adults, as citizens.
We, the people, must declare our need to move out of acrimony for our fellow citizens, all of with whom we share this lifeboat called Earth, and each work on our own different point of view for our common good.
