When you sit back in your soft chair in your retirement years, what will you remember as your adventure? What fond memories will be there?
The word adventure brings up different feelings for different people. Dictionary.com defines it as, “an exciting or very unusual experience.” Just being alive presents us with challenges. Better yet, we each have the ability to CHOOSE to take an adventure, choosing our own rewarding experience.
Having a choice is one of the great powers of being alive. It is the first challenge of being alive, to own and exercise our ability to choose. Don’t feel like you have any choice? Look again. That brain inside your skull might be telling you about limits that are the story of your life, designed to keep you safe. Safe from what? Look again. Try something and see if it works out to be a new adventure. Learn what might be better than the habits we each have already frozen into our lives.
Habits are comfortable and easier since they are already learned, until they become boredom. You get to choose how it is for yourself. Really.
Oh yes, it means stepping out into something different than we already know, maybe learning how to do something, or traveling into a foreign culture. One of my greatest adventures has been being sent by the US Army to Nationalist China, Taiwan, for two years. It was a life expanding experience. First, I had to learn how the choices of the US Army machinery worked. By confronting a problem in being in the Army, my life changed, adding a richness that I could not have imagined beforehand.
Find out what is out there, just over your horizon. Make some great memories.
